Arizona must build a full-employment economy. We CAN build an economy where everyone has a job that pays enough to raise a family and live in dignity. Too many live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to own a home. Too many struggle with managing the high costs of childcare and healthcare. We CAN build an economy where ALL Arizonans have an equal opportunity to thrive.
In a recent study of counties in the US, the cost of living was determined based on the cost of housing, transportation, daycare, healthcare, food, utilities and everyday expenses. In Maricopa County a family of 4 with 2 small children needs to earn roughly $68,000 per year just to get by. That equates to about $16.35 per hour for both adults. According to the US census in 2016 the media income in Maricopa County was $55,676 with 15% living in poverty.
We must do better. We must invest in public education at all levels and in workforce training. We must invest in modern infrastructure, solar and green energy industries, in our small businesses and our home grown entrepreneurs. Let’s create a level playing field for all businesses and the hard working families that support them.
