Lawmakers were told in 2011 that oversight of the voucher program was so weak, it “was almost a sham.” Little has changed.
“As the program expanded, resources to scrutinize the expenditures — made using state-provided debit cards — never kept pace. The Legislature gave the Department of Education money for the program but wouldn’t authorize spending much of it. The warnings of lax oversight and little accountability proved prescient. Money was misspent but the state recovered almost none of it.”
This program needs to be completely overhauled to ensure it meets stringent standards and our tax money is not wasted.
